USING THE POCKET P.C. ENVIRONMENT
Trek-Tracker is a program designed in response to our own
need as Land Surveyors to navigate easily and accurately on unknown terrain.
This
program has been refined and streamlined for a wide variety of uses, offering
the same accuracy, efficiency and convenience, while removing the need for
dealing with the complexities of map scale and geographic datums.
Trek-Tracker
allows you to use the map of your choice, such as a topographic quadrangle,
aerial photograph, tax map or any combination of maps, and navigate on it
using your NMEA capable G.P.S. Receiver.
Trek-Tracker is intended to be a navigational tool for people on foot. Although there are many vehicular uses for
it, the size of your map may be limited by the available memory of your Pocket
PC.
Many
types of maps are available from numerous sources: Aerial Photographs, Satellite Images, Topographic Maps and Tax (Assessors)
Maps are available for many parts of the world on the internet. Paper maps may be scanned and used. Maps are stored as raster files, in BMP or JPEG formats.
After
the mapping is loaded onto your Pocket PC, it can then be geo-referenced, or you
can geo-reference it when you arrive at the location of the map. Geo-referencing is the simple process of
establishing the latitude, longitude and scale of your map. It can be done by visiting two locations
that are visible on your map and recording the locations with your G.P.S.
receiver, or by entering other known information about the map.
Trek-Tracker
will then display your location on the map with a red circle, and as you move
about, will display the track of where you have been with a red line.
The
accuracy of the location depends on both the G.P.S. receiver and the
image. A typical hand held G.P.S.
receiver can deliver positions that are correct to within 15 meters (50 feet) on
the ground. More expensive D.G.P.S.
(differentially corrected receivers) can provide results better than 1
meter. Various sources of mapping also
have different degrees of geographical accuracy.
